- Heat Pumps are too Expensive to install
A common misconception is that Air Source Heat Pumps are so much more expensive than gas boilers and although the average boiler costs around £3,700 and the average ASHP costs £14,000 it is important to mention that you can get a government grant that offers £7,500 towards to the cost. This is called the BUS (boiler upgrade scheme) and most installers will apply for this on your behalf. Additionally in the long run they are more economically friendly especially when paired with Solar PV as you are then using electricity from the sun.
- Heat Pumps are noisy
One of the biggest misconceptions about heat pumps is that they make a considerable amount of noise and while they do make some sound it could be compared to the sound of a household appliance like a dishwasher. It is also worth remembering that they are positioned outside so it is likely you will be able to hear it in your home.
- Heat Pumps stop working when it gets really cold
Just like your more traditional heating systems when it gets colder it will nee to work harder, however heat pumps can function effectively in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. This is not a normal temperature for the UK so it is unlikely the weather will ever have an effect. Manufacturers are working continuously to reduce this figure so that they can work in temperatures even lower than that!
- You need lots of space for a heat pump
Just like you need the space to have a gas boiler, you will need the space to have an air source heat pump however it is not as significant as people may think. Even if you have a flat or terraced house heat pumps can be fitted on a wall or areas of garden space.
- Heat Pumps can only be installed in new homes
The good news is that almost any home can have a heat pump installed regardless of age or size. The ability to install a heat pump isn’t actually related to the age of the property but the heat loss. In some cases there may need to be upgrades but these things are to make the heat pump work best for your home.
